By Harry Mottram: Cleveland Pools will remain closed following the flooding in January 2024. In a statement Paul Simons, Chair of the Cleveland Pools Trust said: “In the period since the flood, extensive investigations have been conducted into the flooding incident, which caused serious damage to the pools’ operating plant and machinery in its plantroom.

“There has also been some damage to the surrounding areas of the main pool and the focus of the ongoing technical investigations is on the nature and extent of damage to the pool structure itself and connecting pipework.”

The lower section of the pools are on a flood plain close to the River Avon which broke its banks. during exceptionally heavy rain. Paul Simons said the plant room had been designed to be flood proof but ‘water had found its way in’ and there was an investigation into how it happened. No date has been given for its reopening although work continues to sort out the issue.

The pools back in the day

Opened in 1815, the pools are the oldest outdoor public swimming pools in the country. They were closed in 1984 after they fell into poor state of maintenance but in 2003 after the pools were put up for sale by the Council a number of people were galvanised into taking action.
Ann Dunlop, Janice Dreisbach and Roger Houghton, set up the Cleveland Pools Trust in 2004 to rescue the pools from dilapidation and after fundraising and grants the pools were eventually repaired and updated and reopened in 2023.
