By Harry Mottram: Welcome to the 19th century, remade in the 21st century when the great powers feel entitled to grab whatever country or territory they fancy. No justification in needed apart from spurious historic claims – just marshal your armies and march in. Already Russia smarting from the collapse of the Soviet Union have grabbed parts of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia and openly mull over the options of invading Finland, Poland and the Baltic states. And China says it will invade Taiwan while the United States of America under the unhinged President Trump fancy Greenland, Panama, Canada and Gaza. While this game of Empires is open season for invasion I hope Italy doesn’t decide to take back Gaul and Britannia at the point of a short sword as we’ll have to speak Latin.

If these former Cold War super powers think it’s OK to become the new colonial masters of wherever they choose then why not everyone else – including Britain. After all the British were the masters of colonialism in the 19th century. Australia, India and Africa are a long way away so the obvious former colonies to grab back under British rule are the rebel 13 states of East America. Boston, New York, Baltimore and Charlston would certainly give Kier Starmer’s plans for growth in the UK economy a boost. I honestly feel Americans will enjoy driving on the left, drinking tea and watching Dr Who on Saturday nights.

Then there’s Russia’s claims to Alaska, Mexico’s claims for Texas, and Spain’s claims for California seem as justified as the USA demanding Greenland, Canada and Panama. And as for Gaza being on Trump’s list of desirable real estate sites then Turkey can put in an equally valid claim for pretty much the whole of the Middle East.

The blame for all of this madness lies entirely with the American electorate who in their wisdom elected a known felon and liar who has no morals. Trump has set in chain the new game of empires – not some 19th century scramble for Africa or The Great Game – but a 21st century charter of conquest and land grabs where justification is based on ‘because they can.’ If this virus takes hold then I fear that once again the Romans will take Gaul and fix their eyes on Britain and make us all speak Latin.
